On Halloween evening, October 31, appropriately enough, at the La Femme Show Lounge, newcomer Bad Karma won the Miss Gay 90’s Contest, with a $500 cash award. In front of a large and appreciative audience, she emerged on top of a field of five contestants: Scotia, Octavia Bonet, Mercedes Iman, Shanice Rodgers, and Bad Karma. The contest consisted of three categories—evening gown, question and answer, and talent—with Bad Karma sweeping the latter. Longtime La Femme Show Director Nina Di Angelo emceed the event. Last year’s Miss Gay 90’s, perennial titleholder Geneva Richards, stepped down from her title, although she continues to reign as Miss City of the Lakes. Along with Di Angelo and Richards, other La Femme performers, including Prada Diamond, displayed their awesome talent at the contest. The La Femme ensemble is onstage Wednesday through Sunday at the Gay 90’s.

Ed-Hyuck-Holiday-2013

1. Beatles On Air Live at the BBC Vol. 2
Nearly two decades after the first set was issued – and nearly half a century after they were first aired – several dozen classic tracks performed by the Beatles in their live prime are finally available (legally, at least; bootlegs have been out for decades). Fab Four fans will be thrilled to hear two previously unheard tracks – “I’m Talking About You” and “Beautiful Dreamer” among the tunes here, along with a completely different line up from the first volumes. And to add the fun, there is plenty of between-song banter with the very young and very cheeky quartet. If you missed out on the first set in 1994, a combo box set is also available.
$19.99

2. Trampled by Turtles Live at First Avenue
Sure, it’s not a single, 30-minute droning solo, but this Duluth-area band celebrates a decade together with a smoking set recorded at the confines of the Minneapolis music mainstay. As the Turtles has pushed at the boundaries of the local scene to become something bubbling up nationwide, they’ve never lost the deep connection with their musical and cultural roots. You can hear live editions of “Wait So Long” and Alone,” of course, along with more obscure cuts. The band even showcases the full breadth of their influences with a cover of the Pixies “Where Is My Mind?” For the visually inclined, a DVD captures the set (recorded over three nights), while a bundle that includes the DVD, a vinyl copy of the album and a coffee-table book is also available.
$9.99

3. Erasure Snow Globe
Really, who doesn’t want a collection of seasonal, Christmas and holiday songs from this longstanding British dance-pop duo not named The Pet Shop Boys? The resulting album is a mixed lot of classic holiday tunes (from “Silent Night” to “White Christmas”) to original seasonally themed tracks. The originals are more satisfying here, as the various standards sound forced when rendered in a synth-pop style. When crafting their own music, Andy Bell and Vince Clarke give us a slightly moody rendition of the holiday with tunes like “Blood on the Snow” (which sounds like a track from A Very Special Fargo Christmas) and “There’ll Be No Tomorrow,” while even “White Christmas” has more than a touch of menace hiding in its chilly grooves.
$9.99

4. Madonna The MDNA World Tour Blu-Ray
If you missed Madonna’s last world tour – or just want to revisit the memories – this live concert film will bring it all to life in your living room, den, bed room or wherever you want to enjoy it. Footage is drawn from more than 80 shows from the sold-out tour, employing dozens of cameras to build the perfect audio and visual experience. Both are vital for this tour, as Madonna not only brought the music, but also crafted a visual feast featuring 25 dancers and plenty of stage effects. On the music side, we get an overview of Madonna’s career, from “Papa Don’t Preach” and “Express Yourself” to “Vogue” to “Gang Bang” and “Love Spent.”

Lavender’s On The Record – Year In Review 2013

$
0
0

Another year, another collection of terrific music – with plenty of it coming from local shelves. Here are ten of my favorites from 2013:

Polica

1. Polica Shulamith

It’s been a wild couple of years for Polica, the Twin-Cities group that found success seemingly moments after they formed, issuing a well-regarded debut (Give You the Ghost) followed by plenty of national attention. The band’s sophomore release finds the group spreading into new sonic territory beyond the moody electronics that dominated their debut. It makes for a heady collection loaded with tunes packed with depth.

Savages

2. Savages Silence Yourself

Rock ‘n’ roll may be struggling at present, but there’s still brand-new bands putting up the good fight. London’s Savages crafted the most energizing album of the year, referencing decades of punk, post-punk and indie styles while still offering a fresh sound that can make the most cynical rocker happy.

lizzo

3. Lizzo Lizzobangers

Twin-Cities rapper Lizzo is as hot as they come right now and her debut album finds a young artist packed with confidence and bravado and sporting a vibe that is easily recognizable as the “Twin Cities Sound.” She teams up with Doomtree’s Lazerbeak here, who provides the kind of tough backing that has made the music from the collective so compelling over the years.

David Bowie

4. David Bowie The Next Day

Bowie takes cues from his classic 1970s sound, down to referencing the cover to “Heroes” here. Connecting to the past lifted our favorite musical chameleon to rare late-career heights that embraced nearly half a century of musical exploration.

Dessa

5. Dessa Parts of Speech

Dessa continues to explore the intersection between a myriad of musical styles, employing as much singing as rapping on her tremendous 2013 album. The songs are packed with honesty and driven by a bracing sense of musical exploration.

Har Mar Superstar

6. Har Mar Superstar Bye Bye 17

His latest album finds our favorite Superstar plying the cool side of the ‘60s and ‘70s, digging into soul and R&B with pretty joyful results. There’s sultry soul (“Lady, You Shot Me”) and plenty of tunes that could pack the dance floor in any decade.

Tame Impala

7. Tame Impala Lonerism

Tame Impala moves into rock’s heady history to build one of the most beguiling records of the year. These Australians never met a psychedelic groove they didn’t like, but the sense of adventure – along with nods along to the way to more modern styles – makes them more than just a tube-amp-using nostalgia act.

Low

8. Low The Invisible Way

There’s more to drones with this longstanding (20 years and counting) Duluth-based band. The music is often low key, but the songs themselves are hauntingly beautiful and full of energy and drive, from the soft pop of “Plastic Cup” to the sweep of “On My Own.”

Sigur Ros

9. Sigur Ros Kveikur

Everybody’s favorite obscure Icelandic rockers made a strong return in 2013, issuing a collection of tunes that kept the band firmly in the strange inner space they have inhabited for a decade and a half, while allowing a bit more access for newcomers. No, Kveikur isn’t a pop record, but it’s more than the soundscapes staying in the mind. It’s also the melody.

Joy Formidable

10. The Joy Formidable Wolf’s Law

Ironic hipsterism and mumblecore hasn’t destroyed all outsized emotions, as this Welsh trio proves here, as they wear their epic influences – from Sonic Youth to My Bloody Valentine – on wind-swept sleeves for the likes of “The Ladder is Ours” and “Maw Maw Song.”

Features Awesome Male Dancers Up Close and Personal

On February 3, Men’s Night at the Town House in St. Paul celebrates its lucky seventh anniversary at the bar with a gala party. The popular weekly event debuted in the early 2000s at the now-defunct Over the Rainbow bar several miles away in St. Paul but moved to its present venue after the previous one closed in 2006.

The cozy Lounge in the rear of the Town House is where Men’s Night happens every Monday from 10 PM to 1 AM. It features awesome male dancers who get up close and personal with customers in the intimate setting. A group of regular patrons is usually there every week, but newcomers are always welcome, of course.

Veteran bartender Trenton Dumont, who presided over Men’s Night when it was at Over the Rainbow, continues that tradition now at the Town House. A native of Montana who moved here a decade ago, he’s the perfect host. In addition, he oversees the male dance troupe that performs weekly at the Town House as well as occasionally at regional bars like The Main Club in Superior, Wisconsin. Full Disclosure: When Dumont and I first met in 2003, we discovered that we share something very intimate—the same birthday, June 23, although I’ll confess that he’s half my age!

Helping to create the ideal atmosphere for Men’s Night is one of the top DJs on the GLBT bar scene, Kevin Hague. He spins just the right eclectic musical selection. In addition, “Father” Chris makes sure that everything goes smoothly with the welcoming physical ambience, including erotic but nonsexual male videos.

If you haven’t experienced Men’s Night at the Town House, you’re missing one of the most fun occasions at any GLBT bar in the Twin Cities. Plus, there’s no cover for such a hot time!

Reflektor-1

Arcade Fire Reflektor

Considering they have ridden the line between restraint and drama since 2004’s classic debut Funeral, it’s no surprise that album number four finds Arcade Fire making a bloated, messy, but often compelling double album. Over the course of 75 minutes, the Canadian group merges their usual dynamics with a dance vibe inspired by a trip to Haiti and aided by production from LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy. It’s trippy, confounding and often considerably compelling, with the songs referencing the story of Eurydice and Orpheus amid the extended dance grooves presaged by the opening title track (and leadoff single). Even the peppy musical moods fall back by the second half of the album, as the songs extend and a sense of quiet darkness overtakes the proceedings.

MIA

M.I.A. Matangi

When she emerged seemingly out of nowhere in 2005, M.I.A. was a remarkable breath of fresh air. Her multicultural approach to rap and hip-hop broke open a stale genre and ushered in a new generation of smart, confrontational artists. Eight years and three albums later, M.I.A. is in danger of being outstripped by those she inspired. Matangi isn’t a bad album by any stretch, but with a few exceptions (such as the stuttering, strutting lead single “Bring the Noize”) there is a bit of “going through the motions” here. She tries to recreate hit “Paper Planes” several times here, but none of those tunes have that tune’s striking mix of samples and vocals. The album feels tired – as if M.I.A. has lost her way.

ARtpop

Lady Gaga Artpop

The usual arc for an artist is to come out of the gates wearing their influences clearly on their sleeves. As they mature, more and more of their own voice emerges. The opposite is true for Gaga, who hid her Madonna influences behind a wall of eccentric musical and personal choices. As the shock has worn off, the devotion to Ms. Ciccone has grown more and more pronounced, to the point where Artpop could just be a lost album from Madonna. The problem is that it isn’t a particularly good lost album, working mainly in tired dance beats and platitudes no more sophisticated than “we should be together.” Artpop doesn’t just fail to shock like Lady Gaga’s earlier work – it completely fails to engage.

mason_jennings_always_been-1

Mason Jennings Always Been

Hanging out with music legends can rub off on any artist, even one as accomplished as Mason Jennings. A chat with Patti Smith led to “Patti and Robert” (about Smith’s relationship with Robert Mapplethorpe), a core track on Jennings’ latest impressive collection of mature, folk-tinged rock ‘n’ roll. The sense of intense self-examination and exploration that marks Smith’s work can be found throughout this collection. Jennings also embraces his rootsier side this time around, working with producer Bo Ramsey (Greg Brown and others) and a full band (including two of Ramsey’s sons from the Pines) that gives the whole album a warm, homespun vibe. Into that, the songwriter pours plenty of honesty in tunes like “Brand New Old Friend” that make this a consistent, compelling listen.

Fresh produce is no longer something reserved for summer with the Mill City Farmers Market moving indoors for its third winter. “Many of our farmers have produce well beyond the outdoor season as well as many value-added products so we thought providing an indoor marketplace would be a great opportunity,” says Katherine Heilmann, the market’s marketing and events manager. Against a backdrop of the Mill City Museum, visitors to the winter market can expect to be surprised by all of the fresh produce harvested year-round, with many of the same vendors as the summer markets. Heimann says, “Visitors can shop for everything from seasonal produce, pastured meats and cheeses, granola, baked goods, fermented and pickled vegetables, jams, preserves, local art and more!” And, since the market is indoors, there is no need to worry about the weather – a welcome change from the unpredictable summer season.

Adults and kids alike will learn through interactive displays and presentations from scientists and educators at leading Twin Cities companies. “It’s important for students of color to meet people like them, with similar backgrounds and experiences, and learn about the professionals’ path into amazing scientific careers,” says Kim Ramsden, the museum’s director of communications. Ramsden cites that three out of five employment opportunities in the next decade will require STEM capabilities, but the U.S. ranks 17th out of 34 countries in science and 25th in math. That achievement gap is even more pronounced in students of color. Done in a science fair style, Ramsden says “participation in the many exciting areas of science and meeting professionals of different backgrounds can spark the curiosity of a student to be the next big dreamer.”

Art Shanty Project
White Bear Lake
February 1 – February 23
http://artshantyprojects.org/

The Art Shanty Projects were started by artists Peter Haakon Thompson and David Pittman, two local artists who were interested in the ecosystem of ice fishing villages and wondered how that would (or could) apply to the arts. “In a way they started a self-appointed residency program out on the ice,” says Melinda Childs, the Art Shanty Projects Director. The project has a few main goals: First, think about space (particularly relatively unregulated or underutilized space) in new and creative ways; second, to create community through participatory art experiences and lastly, to encourage hibernating Minnesotans to get outside and be active and social in the winter. Child’s advice for first time visitors is to dress warmer than you think you need to – wind on the lake can bite! “Beyond that, come prepared to let your guard down,” she says. “It’s not necessarily about seeing every single shanty, your experience may be to stay in one shanty all day learning how to knit. Just be open to what comes to you!”

Since it was founded in 1992, the Imperial Court of Minnesota (ICOM), primarily a fundraising organization according to its mission statement, has brought in hundreds of thousands of dollars for myriad local charities.

But ICOM has its fun side, too, with plenty of crowns and gowns at events that raise money as well. That will be most evident at its grandest spectacle of the year, Coronation XXII, on February 8 at the Radisson Plaza Hotel in Downtown Minneapolis. Appropriately enough, the theme is “An Imperial Ball at St. Petersburg’s Winter Place.”

ICOM is a monarchical organization, meaning that an emperor and empress elected each year preside over activities. At Coronation XXII, Regent Emperor XXI, Jeff Crump, and Empress XXI, Burnadate Daniels, will step down after a successful reign. That night, new monarchs will be crowned.

Evie Blank and Brie J’órdòn are vying for empress, while Darin Hatch is the sole candidate for emperor. Voting takes place on February 1 at the Radisson Plaza Hotel. Candidate J’órdòn held a benefit for HOPE 4 YOUTH on January 19 at the Town House in St. Paul and a benefit for the St. Cloud State University LGBT Resource Center on January 23 at Biology 701 in St. Cloud. Candidate Blank has a benefit for Bill’s Pantry on January 25 at the Saloon. Candidate Hatch has a benefit for The Aliveness Project on January 31 at the Gay 90’s.

Other activities take place the weekend of Coronation XXII: the Out of Town Show on February 7 at the Saloon, and the Victory Brunch on February 9 at the Radisson Plaza.

Patti LaBelle Soars Onstage

In the 50 years since Patti LaBelle started in show business, a lot of singers have tried to imitate the vocal stylings of the R&B diva, with her unique combination of jazzy phrasing, gospel passion and pop drama.

But after all these years the pretenders still can’t touch the original, a fact made abundantly clear when LaBelle, at “69 years young”, took the Mystic Showroom stage at Mystic Lake Casino Hotel this past Saturday in her third show of the new year. LaBelle took the time to let the audience know who the true diva was, as these “girls with possibilities” often look to her for guidance, dropping names like Fantasia, Mýa, Beyoncé, and Toni Braxton among her advisees. “If I can’t ell these little diva girls about life, who can? I am the chosen one,” LaBelle explained.

After a fourteen year hiatus from the Mystic Showroom, LaBelle stunned the audience with her soaring vocals, periodically reminding everyone that a young songstress may have made a song popular, but “don’t get it twisted…I did it first.”

And indeed she did. With more than 50 million albums sold worldwide, LaBelle has collaborated with a wide range of artists including Ray Charles, Mary J. Blige and Kanye West. She has won two Grammy Awards and received eleven Grammy nominations. LaBelle has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, the Apollo Theater Legends Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

After kick-starting the show with an energetic rendition of her hit “New Attitude,” which earned her a standing ovation, LaBelle transitioned into the slow jams “If You Asked Me To” and “If Only You Knew,” which showcased her acrobatic melisma. LaBelle was a showstopper in a white ‘50s cocktail dress silhouette, but it wasn’t long before she was flashing the fuchsia lining and reminding everyone that age is just a number if you’re young at heart.

As she crooned through decades of hits, LaBelle made her way through everyone’s favorites. For the obligatory performance of what is perhaps her best-known song, the 1974 funk classic “Lady Marmalade,” originally performed with the group Labelle, the singer put a fun twist by inviting men from the audience to sing and dance to rather hilarious effect. This act may have gone on longer than necessary, but that can be blamed on more men than was requested jumping up on stage.

Throughout the night, LaBelle would frequently pause to either dab her face or look at herself in a hand mirror and fix herself before continuing on. Although this had a comedic effect early on, the habit soon grew distracting for the audience. But, as a music icon and legend, LaBelle somehow manages to get away with it.

LaBelle closed the show with a heartfelt encore of “You Are My Friend,” which took on added emotional heft thanks to a montage of images of the singer with famous friends from over the years (Al Green, Michael Jackson, President Barack Obama) culminating with her three sisters and parents. This went on as LaBelle walked her way through the audience, belting out the ballad while making eye contact, before disappearing behind the curtain.

Beatles Project

Minnesota Beatles Project Vol. 5

It says a lot about the Beatles that, five volumes in, there are still plenty of classics for local artists to toy with on this set. It also says plenty that the band’s library can be the fodder for traditional rockers, country singers, wild-eyed experimentation, and even a high school jazz band. Here, we have The Suburbs doing a typical Suburbs thing to “Taxman,” maintaining the original’s fire but adding a dance beat. Elsewhere, Actual Wolf and Dosh deconstruct “Your Mother Should Know” and “Blue Jay Way.” The Cactus Brothers bring some old-style country swing to “This Boy,” showcasing one of the numerous influences on the Beatles’ original sound. It wraps up with the Denfield High School Jazz Band putting “Please Please Me” through its paces.

Britney Speas

Britney Spears Britney Jean

I keep trying to focus on the music from this more mature Spears, but I found myself distracted by questions at every turn. Midway through “Work Bitch” – really the best song here – her rap delivery reminded me of Britain’s Lady Sovereign. This led me to wonder what the S.O.V. has been up to in recent years (on the British Big Brother and then hiatus, apparently) and by the time I refocused, the album was nearly over. I’d try again, but then I would wonder why Spears was singing like Gwen Stefani and that led to another whole stream of thoughts. For an album that’s only about 35 minutes long, that’s a lot of distractions going on, but that’s better than this warmed-over pop music.

Amanda Palmer

An Evening with Neil Gaiman and Amanda Palmer

The alternative “it” couple showcases their skills and styles on this massive three-disc set, culled from a 2011 tour. We get stories, poems, and thoughts from Gaiman and plenty of songs from Palmer. They also mix things up here and there, even getting the reclusive Gaiman to share his singing voice and the far-less-reclusive Palmer to share a poem or two. We get stories old and new from Gaiman, often bringing a dark and melancholy edge to the proceedings. Palmer spends time on the piano and ukulele, singing anthems to Judy Bloom, Lady Gaga and her stringed instrument of choice – one you can learn to play in an hour, or the same time to learn how to make a pipe bomb. “You do the math,” she sings.

Kitten Forever

Kitten Forever Pressure

Punk rock certainly lives through this bold-as-brass Minneapolis trio. Channeling Bikini Kill and The Go Gos and their own distinct approach to fierce rock ‘n’ roll, Kitten Forever gives us a quick (it was pressed to a pair of 7-inch EPs for the vinyl release), driving and absolutely brilliant album. From the opening 43 seconds of “Get Loud” to the epic two minute sweep of the final title track, the band pulls no punches on their punk-rock journey. Amazingly, all of this racket is made with just bass (Laura Larson), drums (Corrie Harrigan) and vocals (Liz Elton). Even within the confines of full-on, fuzzed-out punk rock, the trio provides some deft musical changes, like stuttering “Black Ice.” This fell through the musical cracks when it came out late last summer – don’t miss out now.

Show Pony starring Leslie Jordan
Thursday, February 27 – Sunday, March 2
The Cabaret at Camp Bar • 490 N. Robert St., St. Paul

Get ready once again Minnesota! He’s baaack! Leslie Jordan returns to the Twin Cities with his very own special “night at the races,” one man show. As one of American pop culture’s most recognizable, enduring (and endearing) personalities, the diminutive dynamo rides back into town.

Galloping back Camp Bar with his latest on-stage, autobiographical romp, “Show Pony”, Leslie Jordan, the delightful, Deep South Dandy saddles up for an evening of horse feathers hilarity! “Show Pony” is Jordan’s reflections on the never ending, relentless quest for sustainability and longevity in “La-La Land”; still having to pay your dues, life on the road and what it takes to truly stay relevant and in the race. In true thoroughbred form, he remains characteristically frank, charming, self-effacing and wicked!

An admitted, inveterate name dropper, any Jordan show is peppered with those star encounters that seem to only happen to him as he continues to have projects literally fall into his lap that surround him with the biggest names in show business. From being banged on the conker with a frying pan by Betty White (Boston Legal) to trying to convince his director friend at the helm of the Oscar winning megahit, The Help that he’d be just as feasible in the Emma Stone lead role as the now mega star was to being surrounded by an orgiastic collection of screen legends (Jessica Lange, Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates) where getting his eyeballs carved out by a melon baller (American Horror Story) triggered his natural instinct to cajole for more scene-stealing screen time, Jordan as always simply can’t and doesn’t hold back! General Admission: $34.50, VIP Reserved Table Seating: $39.50. Visit www.camp-bar.net/showpony for tickets and more information.

Elder Isolation in the LGBTQ Community – Concerns. Risks. Solutions.
Thursday, February 27 • 6-9pm
The Center for Changing Lives • 2400 Park Ave. S., Minneapolis

Seniors in the LGBTQ community face a far greater risk of isolation, discrimination, and abuse than other members of their generation. According to the 2012 Twin Cities LGBT Aging Needs Assessment Survey Report, they are more likely to live alone and less likely to have children to look after them as they age. LGBT elders are less likely to have a caregiver – yet ironically, are likely to be caregivers themselves. Even in our enlightened society, all too many die alone, forgoing medical care in order to avoid humiliation and abuse. Little Brothers – Friends of the Elderly, in partnership with Prime Timers MSP, present a forum to raise awareness and explore solutions to the risks of elder isolation in the LGBTQ community.

6pm: Showing of the award-winning documentary, Gen Silent
7-9pm: Panel and discussion featuring:

• Paul Bloom, Owner and CEO, Right at Home, Bloomington

• Cathy Croghan, MPH, RN, co-author 2012 Twin Cities LGBT Aging Needs Assessment Survey

• Jay Haapala, Associate State Director-Community Outreach, AARP Minnesota

• Tara Patet, Sr. Prosecutor, St. Paul City Attorney’s Office

• Julie Switzer, MD, Director of Geriatric Orthopedic Trauma, Regions Hospital

FREE admission and refreshments will be served. RSVP today: info@littlebrothersmn.org or 612-746-0726.

Weekly Wednesday Event Is Unique Locally and Nationally

Trans Exotica, a weekly event every Wednesday, 9 PM-2 AM, in the Men’s Room bar downstairs at the Gay 90’s in Downtown Minneapolis, celebrates its one-year anniversary in March. It’s open to all ages 18 and up.

According to director Brandonna Dupri LaReese, who is also the bartender for the evening, Trans Exotica is “the only trans girl exotic dancer night in the Twin Cities”—and indeed nationwide. She notes that the “Rated X” event is “where fantasy and fetish become reality.” It stars La Reese, Christina, Monica, Rere, and Vanessa.

As LaReese points out, “It’s all about the trans community in the Twin Cities. We wanted to provide a place for all trans people and friends to feel welcome and socialize in a fun space.”

LaReese is also show director of Eggs ’n’ Drag, a brunch and drag show Sundays at the Gay 90’s downstairs. Marking its first anniversary in May, the event now takes place weekly on Sundays, 11 AM-2 PM.

Jeremy Messersmith Heart Murmurs

The locally-based singer-songwriter strengthens his position as one of the Twin Cities’ best talents on his latest album, which mixes touches of pop and rock music from multiple generations into a fresh and engaging package. Musically, Messersmith employs a straightforward approach, building off Beatles-esque rock or acoustically driven pop. Beyond that, he builds up plenty of layers that take the songs in unexpected aural directions. On the lyrical front, the sometimes off-kilter nature remains, with tunes like “Tourniquet,” “Hitman,” and “I Want to be Your One Night Stand” showcasing Messersmith’s sometimes macabre sense of humor. At the same time, these songs still ache with lost love; or bask in the warmth of connection. It’s a measured and mature set from a strong player in the local scene.

Against Me! Transgender Dysphoria Blues

As the title suggests, the latest from this Florida band explores transgender issues, especially those of singer Laura Jane Grace, whose transition makes her one of a handful in the often inflexible world of extreme music. The album bristles with musical intensity, though Against Me! leans toward the poppier end of the punk spectrum. The collection features ten cuts that rage out, even on the acoustic “Two Coffins.” Transitional and transgender issues show up throughout, from the title track to its follow up on the album, “True Trans Soul Rebel” and beyond. The band has been at the game for a long time, and hit the right punk-rock buttons here: solid drumming as a backbone, pulsating bass, and ferocious guitars with Grace’s wail holding it all together.

Beyoncé Beyoncé

Beyoncé gave her fans – and pop music lovers in general – a Christmas present (OK, one that cost $10 to download) late last year with this self-titled album. It’s a fittingly fierce collection of tunes that showcase her vocal and musical skills. The album features songwriting and vocal collaborations with a host of folks (including hubby Jay- Z), but there’s no question who is in charge throughout the 14 songs on this collection. Beyoncé also shows she can move with the times, mixing a number of more recent pop, hip-hop, and dance trends into her musical mix. There are propulsive, MIA-like tracks here (“Partition”), smooth-moving ballads (“Superpower” with Frank Ocean), and a song featuring a breakdown from Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. That’s truly fierce.

Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings Give the People What They Want

Sharon Jones’ crusade to recreate and build on classic soul continues on her latest album. Here, the sense of survival and triumph that has carried all of her recent music has been intensified by a real-world battle. Jones’ struggle with cancer delayed the release of the album by six months. Beyond that, these ten tracks bring back the classic soul vibe from the opening riffs of “Retreat!” It is clear that moving back is the last thing on the mind of the singer, who struggled for decades before finding success after her 50th birthday. The ten cuts blaze by in a flash, propelled all the way by the expert playing of the Dap Kings and the warm, analog production that makes this sound like a long-lost classic.
